Letters from Resident Larry Barron
The following letter was submitted to council by resident Larry Barron and forwarded to the Anmore Times. The letter is requesting that council form and election committee to choose an election officer since council has yet to appoint one and asks that the Village no longer provide a grant to the Anmore Times to assist in publishing their print newsletter to Village residents. The link to the full letter is below:
**Editor’s notes:
As background for those that aren’t aware - The Ministry of Community has sent a letter to the Village stating that if the council could not agree on the appointment of an election officer at the Tuesday, February 9th meeting that the Ministry would use it’s rights under the Local Government Act to step in and appoint someone. This letter is available on the Village of Anmore web site under Council Agendas. It appears in the February 9th agenda package.
In reference to the Anmore Times funding – we receive funding from advertising sales and a Village grant (correction: $3500) that we apply for each year. The Village grant is used to cover the cost of printing any government submissions, including submissions from all councillors and the advertising of Village events and notices. Advertising monies are used to pay for letters to the editors and other Village news. The Anmore Times is not a business, it is a community based volunteer organization with an open membership that has had many, many varied volunteer editors over the years. We welcome all submissions and contributions to the paper. We also welcome all volunteers. The paper can only reflect the contributions of those that take the time to write something. If someone, such as Mr. Barron feels the Anmore Times is one sided, we welcome his side.

Perhaps you could post my response which was sent in on Feb 13. I note that the Anmore Alt has it posted. How often do you update your website?

Your email response was simply to say you “would like to allow [council] an opportunity to respond”. That seems a bit curt in view of the issues raised in your email to me after the last council meeting, and for which I have raised related issues. I will address that in a further email.
But are you now saying that you will not post my Feb 13 response because it is not “something newsworthy to post”? Please clarify.

While I can appreciate that the issue of whether to release the Anmore
Times’ financial records for outside perusal might be an appropriate
issue left for discussion at the monthly meeting, I am amazed that it
takes a monthly meeting in order to determine whether or not to publish
my letters regarding the Times. Why should free speech and the right
to critique funding of the Anmore Times require further consideration?
I didn’t know it had to pass a monthly board of censors, or is that
just my submissions?
I don’t mean to sound snide, but it appears to me that you are dodging
the issue of publication.
