Letter from Nicola Iten
Letter to the Editor:
In the wee hours of the morning on February 11th, the Olympic Torch came through the Village of Anmore. It was followed by a pancake breakfast served to 800 people and an Olympic assembly in the school gym. This event not only brought many many people out from the Village but three communities that have been at odds. Anmore, Belcarra and Port Moody have been at loggerheads over many issues over the years, with the Port Moody recreation fee increase of 110% being the latest issue that has alienated Anmore and Belcarra residents from their Port Moody neighbours. It was inspiring to see people from all three communities come together and stand along side each other and welcome the torch, break bread and then listen to the wonderful voices of their children singing together. The choir and band from Heritage Woods High School played before the running of the torch and the Choir sang at the Anmore Elementary school assembly. Then, the choirs from Pleasantside and Anmore Elementary sang together.
The Mayor of Belcarra was there as well as Hal Weinberg, retired Mayor of Anmore. Councillor Kerri Palmer Issak did an absolutely fabulous job of organizing this community event and acting Mayor John McEwen stood tall officiating. School Trustee and Anmore resident Holly Butterfield and School District 43 Assistant Superintendent Sylvia Russell both spoke at the assembly. Over one hundred volunteers did a wonderful job pulling this together.
It was disappointing that Councillors’ Mario Piamonte or Chris Sedergreen had other priorities that morning and could not be at the community pancake breakfast or the Olympic Assembly as it was such a historic community event.

Our volunteers are one of the many wonderful reasons our community has thrived when outsiders said it wouldn’t. We are so lucky people like Nancy Knauer, Eny Hoffer, and too many more to mention, that give so much and ask so little. The torch relay was just another example of how volunteers make us stronger and richer. Thank you to each and every one of you who made this and every event so special!
