I would like to commend the Anmore Times for printing my 2-page letter in the May print edition.
That being said, it is my sincere hope that in the future there will be no need to submit further letters defending myself and others from unwarranted personal attacks. The newly-instituted censorship policy of the Online edition of the Times gives me hope in this regard.
Regarding the March 27 letter by a resident, in which she supports continued funding of the Times by a Village grant, I would point out that she is hardly a disinterested party in that, as she notes, her company advertises in the Times.
In my view it is not the Village’s responsibility, through a grant, to partially subsidize advertising by businesses.
As for delivering print editions of the Times, does a copy need to be delivered to all residents? Couldn’t most households print them out on their computers, and those without such a resource could be mailed a copy? It is inconceivable that this would cost the current grant amount of $3500 a year, particularly when balanced against the Times’ advertising revenue. In addition it would further the Green policy of the Village.
On another note, I have nothing but praise for Councillor Isaac’s support in her letter in the Times for the volunteers in the Village. This is a continuing and commendable theme of hers. I wonder, in the same vein, if she would consider foregoing her Councillor’s salary (or some portion of it) and perform that function on a volunteer basis. It would set a true example that perhaps other Council members would emulate.
A COMMENT FROM THE ONLINE EDITOR:
While the post above contains a comment about our “newly-instituted censorship policy”, we’d like to point out that we don’t feel our policy is a censorship policy, more of a policy of decorum that we hope our readers and contributors will appreciate.
We also need to clarify with our readers that the grant we receive DOES NOT subsidize our advertisers! In fact our advertising sponsors assist us in paying for other content such as our 1 page letters to the editor and other valued community news.
We appreciate your idea of asking residents to print their own copy, but we’ve had a lot of comments from residents who don’t read the paper online or who don’t have a computer. We’ve always been as frugal as possible when it comes to printing the paper and will continue to assess the online vs print needs of the community.
Councillor Palmer-Isaak puts in countless hours volunteering in our community and for the many hours that she and other councillors put into their council job, they are surely earning less than minimum wage. While I don’t think any councillor would say they do the job for the money, the compensation should at least cover their minimum expenses. If the municipality didn’t offer any compensation, I imagine that even less people would run for Village Council, and given the experience of the last eighteen months there are many people who would say you could not pay them enough to run for office.
However, I whole heartedly agree that commending the volunteers of the Village is an admirable thing and I would hope that others on Council would follow suit.
(editor’s note: “This submission is the opinion of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Anmore Times, it’s editors and volunteers.”)
